In 1899, the company introduced sandwiches, which at the time were only served in a few high-end Western-style restaurants in Ginza and Kobe, to ekiben, and launched “Hygiene Sandwich for Travel”. This made sandwiches widely known to the public and led to a huge boom for ekiben. Initially, the company’s home production of imported ham was well received, and in 1900, the company was spun off as an affiliated business to establish Kamakura Ham Tomioka Shokai to manufacture and sell Kamakura ham.[6] In April 1913, the company launched an ekiben version of a fishing port dish, pressed sushi with horse mackerel, and in March 1931, the company was reorganized as a joint-stock company and became a corporation. In March 1931, the company was incorporated as a joint-stock company, and a new building was completed, which is now the head office of the company. By the outbreak of World War II, the company had expanded its business by selling shaumai (steamed pork dumplings), operating in Fujisawa Station of Odakyu Electric Railway, and being commissioned to operate a company cafeteria.
